Neighborhood Boundaries and Naming Conventions

A note on neighborhood boundaries

The neighborhood location tagged to each photo is strictly determined by where the photo was taken on this map. Of course, the exact boundaries of any neighborhood are subjective.

A note on naming conventions

Berg identified the address, cross street, and camera angle of each photograph. For purposes of simplicity and accuracy to the archive, this website uses the identical descriptions and naming conventions Berg provided. However, in the decades since Berg took these photographs, many streets no longer exist. Small streets and city blocks were merged into large and physically impenetrable super blocks. In other cases, the names of many streets and buildings have changed. For instance:

.>OLD NAME ..>NEW NAME
Belmont Ave. Irvine Turner Blvd.
Broad St. Kenneth A. Gibson Blvd.
High St. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Plane St. University Ave.
Waverly Ave. Muhammad Ali Ave.
Newark College of Engineering (NCE) New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)
New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry
Rutgers New Jersey Medical School

When searching this database of photos, search using old naming conventions.
